I'm really excited to be starting with Singapore Math this year! It is a bit different, but it has some awesome potential! This is great article explaining what it is and how it works. "What is Singapore Math?"

During our math block, we also use the workshop approach, although in a slightly different way than for reading and writing. During the math workshop, we start by checking the student's morning work (in the morning, the students complete a review exercise based on the previous day's lesson). Then we have a quick lesson about the day's focus. After that the students head off to one of three stations. The students stay at each station for 20 minutes before rotating to the next. This allows for each small group to work with me each day at the level of need of each group.
Work with Teacher Station
At this station, the students work with me on the lesson of the day. We practice the skill using dry erase boards, manipulatives, and games, and if there is time, I can help the children to start their daily assignment which relates directly to the daily lesson. |
Independent Practice Station
At independent practice, the children begin working on the day's assignment, this is what will be handed in and graded. Some students will start on this before we meet, so when they come to me, we will go over what they did to see how it went. |
Math Games Station
The third group will play math games relating to the skill that we are working on. This is a fun way to practice the skills we're working on in class. |
Math Notebooks
Each child is responsible for keeping a math notebook. In the notebook, the children will record notes on the different math skills that we cover.
First in Math
I am so excited that we will be using First in Math again this year! It is a really fun online program that lets students play games as they practice their math skills! There are daily winners for the student who earns the most points!
