Religion
We wrapped up chapter 2 in our religion books, so we will be taking a quiz on Monday, but the big news this week was Classroom Jeopardy! The game hooks up to the TV and the kids use a buzzer system to ring in with their answers. It even keeps track on the scores as we go. I didn't really think the kids would get so excited about it, but they LOVED it! We'll have to try using this neat tool a little more! We also took part in the Blessing of the Pets on Friday, which is always a lot of fun! The kids are always so proud to see their pets at school and love seeing everyone else's furry friends!
Reading | Writing |
In reading this week, we focused on the skill on inferring! The students worked to make inferences in the stories we read aloud, in their silent reading, and in our class room happenings. I loved hearing their inferences about the Blessing of the Pet! Some of my favorites were:
| Our writers were hard at work finishing up their first published books! Almost all of them are done and ready for Monday's writing celebration and the rest should be able to finish up on Monday morning. If you are available, please join Monday at 12:15 for our writing celebration. It will take place in our classroom. |
Spelling | Math |
This week we focused on long a sounds again. The kids did a great job applying the pattern to the mystery words this week! Next week we are moving on to long e vowel sounds. | We have broken up...our grades that is! We are done with a lot of the general review material and are moving on to grade level specific content. The third graders worked on addition with regrouping while the fourth graders worked on addition in multistep equations. This week, the third graders will be working on subtraction with regrouping, while the fourth graders work on subtracting in multistep equations. |
Science
In science this week the students were back to their stations, learning all about the world around us. The third graders focused on the physical features of living things that help them survive. Many were surprised to learn that the spikes on a cactus are actual special leaves! The fourth graders focused on how living things interact within an ecosystem and examined food chains in various environments. The students also posted to their blogs! We also did some manufacturing! After last week's virtual field trip, the students were inspired to make some things of their own, so I dug out some craft supplies and let them go where their imaginations took them! I was so excited to see how interested the kids were in being creative and just making something. Without even knowing it, the kids were taking part in what is called the "Maker Movement".
Social Studies
We also started our grade specific lessons in social studies as well. In third grade, the students focused on locating Michigan, looking at its landscape, and getting familiar with some of its features. The fourth graders are zooming out on the earth and are focusing on the entire United States. They learned about relative location (which is exactly what they use during Mystery Skype) and also about the landforms in the United States including mountains, the Peidmont, plateaus, and valleys.
