We had such a great, busy first week of third grade! We got a lot of the boring stuff out of the way and hope to get into the more interesting stuff next week! Thank you for sending me such wonderful kids to work with! They have already shown me that they are ready to work hard, think hard, and try their best! We also had a winner in our Goosechase game! Congrats Maya! I'll have a surprise for you on Monday! | |
Language Arts
Reading | Writing |
I'm really excited to be starting a new reading program this year, the kids should already be familiar with it though! They are going to be helping me learn all about Reading Street! This week was spent focusing on benchmark testing (DIBELS & DAZE) and routines, but I'm hoping to dive into Reading Street in the next week. Each student should have also brought home a red reading log. While this is not mandatory, and there isn't a set time your child should be reading, I DO highly encourage your child to use the reading log to track his or her reading throughout the month. There will be a surprise for all of the reading logs turned in at the end of the month!! They don't have to be filled top to bottom, but should show a reasonable amount of reading. We've also been working hard to memorize our first poem - O Sailor Come Ashore! The kids are doing great and should be ready to recite it for the school this coming week! | This week in writing, the students wrote a story about a topic of their choosing to show me what kind of writers they are! It is always so fun to see what the students choose to write about and what they are interested in! They also started writing in the ELA notebooks and wrote about their favorite part of summer vacation. We also started working in our new grammar program - Well Ordered Language (you will see it written as WOL). I can already say that I like it better than Simple Solutions and I hope your child does too. It has the same skills, but are presented in a much nicer way. Next week, we will also be starting our blogs, which should be a ton of fun |
LatinThe third graders will be starting their first Latin lessons on Monday! I think this is going to be such a great opportunity for our kids and will really help strengthen their English skills as well! | SpellingThis week, we started spelling with a Words Their Way Spelling Inventory. This is a great survey and really does a great job showing where students are in their progression towards becoming a great speller! Our normal spelling kicks off on Monday. The students will take a pretest and will bring home a list from which they can study at home. There isn't any set homework, but they will all have access to spellingcity.com (there is also an app). The username and password on the inside front cover of your child's agenda. They CAN play without logging in, but they will have access to more games if they login. We will be working on the words in class and the students will be tested on Friday. |
Math
Singapore Math | First in Math |
We dipped our toes into the new Singapore Math curriculum. It is definitely a bit different, but they kids are doing pretty well with it. I think the hardest part is not over-thinking it! It is really neat to see how they are already starting to think a tiny bit differently about math - I'm really excited to see where they'll be at the end of the year! I'm still waiting on some hands-on tools to arrive, so I think when that happens, it will help a lot as well. As for homework, some students have needed to bring home their workbooks to complete an assignment. You are free to help them through it, but since it is such a different approach I understand that you may not be sure exactly what needs to happen. If this happens and your child has made his or her best effort, just sign off on where he or she left off and we'll figure it out when they bring it back to school | We started First in Math this week and I think the kids are enjoying it! There is a great variety of games, and some of the kids are really enjoying the competitive aspect as well! This is a great tool for getting kids to practice math at home! They can login at firstinmath.com using the login information in the front of their agendas. They also have an app, making this great for kids with their own tablets! |
Religion
Month in Faith
Saint of the Month - St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Virtue for September - Hope Verse - Jeremiah 29:11-13 - For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart.” |

PhotosYou can see what we've been up to this week by checking our photo page or by visiting our Facebook page. | Maker BagsI was so happy to see all the thought and creativity that went into the students' projects! They are SO cute! They are currently on display outside of our classroom for everyone to see! | BehaviorOverall, I've been very happy with the kids' behavior. They are definitely a class of talkers, but they are so sweet and ready to learn! We had ALMOST everyone at this week's Fun Friday surprise trip to the Dairy Kream and I KNOW we will help everyone make it next week! |
ICYMI | Revisions | Grades |
| I don't give extra credit, so I highly encourage students to correct mistakes on their assignments. We learn BEST from our mistakes! When making revisions, please be sure that any changes are done using a red pen/pencil. If it is in a notebook or workbook, please add a sticky note to the page so I can see where the changes have been made. | Grades are posted on Ascend. I'm not sure if the paperwork has gone home yet, but if not, it should be going home soon. It is totally new this year, so we're all trying to get the hang of it! |
