Benchmarking
Makers Movement
We also spent some time exploring our Maker Space! The students had the choice to use our Ozobot robots, the Ozmo, or coding on the iPads. We ran a little short on time, so not all of the students got to try everything, but there will be lots of time to explore as we continue throughout the school year. You can see more pictures from our "Make It" bags and the Maker Space on our Photo Page.
Summer Reading | Reading Workshop |
The summer reading projects were also lovely! It was interesting to see which books each of the kids picked and how they decided to represent it! They are currently on display in the hallway if you happen to be in the school at all. There are also some pictures on the Photo Page (I missed a few of them, I was too busy listening!) | I always love starting our reading workshop because it means lots of time spent reading together. We read a few of my favorite books, including When I Was Young in the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant, and My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother by Patricia Polacco. This week we focused on finding meaning in a story, for both the author and for us as readers, and we also worked on making connections while we read, both important strategies that will help us to grow as readers. |
Writing Workshop
Behavior | Mass Servers |
I think the very best part of this week was the behavior! I told my students my expectations on the first day and they have been golden! There have been a few reminders here and there (mostly for a few chatterboxes), but it has definitely been minimal! Because of their great behavior, we were able to celebrate our first Fun Friday! I brought in some popsicles for a treat and the students were able to have a few extra minutes of recess this afternoon to enjoy the sunshine. | We have a few students who told me that they are already trained to be servers at Mass. If your child would like to be trained and has already completed his or her First Communion, let me know and I will talk to Father Ben and get them trained. |
Housekeeping
- Agendas and homework folders need to be brought home and back to school each day
- Agendas should be signed by a parent each night/morning (or other caregiver)
- We'll be starting Simple Solutions in class Monday. Any work not completed in class will be assigned as homework.
- Spelling homework as well as Reading and Math logs will also start Monday. Be sure to look for them in your child's homework folder.
- Gym is on Wednesday, so the students will need to bring/wear gym shoes. Mr. Bintner has also asked for the students to wear gym shoes on Thursdays for health since they will sometimes be having their health class outside (while the weather is nice).
- Speaking of the weather, it is starting to feel like fall, so be sure your child has a sweater or jacket for recess time.
- Students may bring water bottles to school to keep on their desks during the day. Only water may be brought into our room (we just got new carpet last summer and I'd hate to have a sticky mess on it!)
- Students are allowed to bring Kindles/e-readers for their silent reading time as long as they have a note from a parent saying it's okay with them (definitely not required, but I've had this question a few times)
Looking Forward
- Monday, September 14 - Picture Day - Picture packets were sent home yesterday. If you need a new one, I'm guessing you could probably get one in the office on Monday morning.
- Tuesday, September 15 - PTO Meeting - 6:00 pm in the library
- Wednesday, September 16 - School Board Meeting - 4:00 pm in the library
- Thursday, September 17 - Mass - 9:00 am, 6th grade will be presenting Mass
- I'm also in the process of planning a field trip to Seney. It will be later in the month (still waiting to get the exact date confirmed with them). We'll probably only need 1 or 2 parents to go, so if you are interested, let me know. I'll let you know as soon as we have a date set in stone.
