- Book orders for October were sent home yesterday and are due by next Friday, October 14. You can order online at scholastic.com and use the class code: L49RZ
- Our field trip to Seney may be changing dates because the transit is not available Wednesday. I contacted Seney about switching the date but haven't heard back yet.
- MAP testing is coming up the week of the 17th.
- Interims will be going home this week. You will receive a copy for your records and a copy to sign and return. They will be in a manila envelope that should be returned as well (I will reuse it for the rest of the year).
- Students can make corrections to their assignments and resubmit for extra points. When making corrections, please do so in red colored pencil or crayon and mark the page with a sticky note if it is a workbook/notebook (if there isn't one already there). We learn best from our mistakes so I highly encourage students to go back over their assignments and make corrections.
- Pictures have been uploaded to the Photos page. Be sure to check the September 2016 page for pictures from last month!
I've got a busy weekend ahead, but I wanted to share a few things.
Hi folks! I have been so busy enjoying the fall weather these past few weekends, I haven't had much time to post updates! I hope you are enjoying this weather too!! Language Arts
religionWe are excited to learn about our new saint of the month: St. Thomas Aquinas! We will also be learning about the virtue of studiousness. This is a great trait that many of our students already possess! We are also presenting Mass this week, so we hope to see you at church on Thursday! MathI'm REALLY excited about how well our math is going. We are working hard to train our brains to think differently. It is hard, but we are making progress. I got some neat place value chips to add to our math lessons, and I think that it has been helpful for the kids to actually manipulate the pieces. Right now, we are focusing on mental math. It basically focuses on making 10's when adding and subtracting. So, for example: 67 + 54 To add this mentally, we will steal 3 ones from 54 and add them to 67, making it 70. Then, we simply add 70 and 51 mentally to find our solution. For the few students who still struggle with their basic facts, this has been a little tricky, but hopefully it will become easier as they strengthen their math skills. I would suggest practicing basic addition and subtraction facts at home - specifically facts that add up to 10 (for example, 1+9, 2+8, etc...) On First in Math, there are lots of "Ten" games, especially in the bonus games. I suggest the "First in Tens - Addition", "First in Tens - Subtraction", and "Ten Wheels". Science
Social StudiesWe've had a hard time making time for social studies. We have been able to work our way through two of our newspapers, but have had little time for anything else. This makes me super sad because social studies is my favorite! I'm hoping to spend the rest of this week working on the maps the kids started last week - they look awesome and we need to finish them so we can show them off! HousekeepingField TripWe will be taking our field trip to Seney National Wildlife Refuge next week. I'm so excited for the program that they've put together for us. The students may bring a cold lunch (with their names labeled) or can order a cold lunch from the kitchen. I'll be taking a count later this week. Also, ALL missing/incomplete work MUST be complete in order to attend the field trip. I make it a point to give the students adequate time to complete work (both in class and as well as with flexible deadlines to allow for completion at home). Students choosing not to complete assignments will need to stay at school to ensure that all missing work is caught up. Important Dates:
