Reading
This week, we continued to explore why genres are used as well as how we can categorize books. The students made collages using old book orders, each poster showcasing a different genre. I've got them all laminated and ready to display around the room for the kids to reference throughout the year.
The students have also been doing a great job with Accelerated Reader! Many of the students have already met their AR goals for the marking period and we're only a few weeks in!

Social Studies
Where to start for social studies? It was definitely a busy week in our social studies class! We're still working on map skills and were blessed with some wonderful visitors who helped the students with a lesson on orienteering! The students learned how to use an orienteering compass and how to sight a bearing! It was also great practice for finding our cardinal directions! Along with map skills, we also started learning about land forms! The students are currently working to create islands featuring a variety of landforms. They are all very clever and will be shown off in the hallways when they are finished! |
Another exciting adventure was Geocaching! While at the environmental lab, the students got to try out geocaching! Geocaching is basically a treasure hunt! People hide "caches" all over the world and post the coordinates of the cache online so that anyone with a GPS receiver can find it! Not all of the groups found a cache, but they all had fun trying! If you would like more information on geocaching, I have set up a page on our website explaining a little bit more about it. We also had our 4th Mystery Skype on Friday with Mr. Jagels class from Austin, Texas! Both classes asked great questions, but we ended up being victorious and guessing their location first! The students are getting VERY good at using the map to narrow down the states! |
Math
The kids are also doing AWESOME with First in Math! I like that so many of the kids are excited about it and are playing at home. We've actually had a good variety of Players of the Day, too - only ONE person has gotten it twice so far! We've got quite a competitive group!
Science
| Last, but not least is science! In science this week, the students continued to learn about living things and applied all that learning to our field trip to the environmental lab! The students worked in groups to find a variety of living things in our Photo Scavenger Hunt! Of all the things to give them trouble, would you believe that a feather was the trickiest item? Even so, I think it is safe to say that the kids had fun and were definitely worn out when we got back to school! |
Have a great weekend!
