Valentine's DayCan you believe it is already almost Valentine’s Day? To celebrate, we will be exchanging Valentines and making “Friendship Mix” on Feb. 12. Each student in the class has volunteered to bring in something to add so each child will end up with a nice bag of Friendship Mix! Your child can also bring a box to put their valentines in – there will be prizes for the prettiest, funniest, and most creative boxes. I will also have paper bags they can decorate if they don’t want to make a box. |

Mackinac Island
We are also starting to plan our trip to Mackinac Island! The date is set for May 20th. We will most likely need parents to drive since there is only one class going that way this year and I doubt that we will be able to take a bus. If you already know that you would like to be a driver and can take extra students, please let me know. It is still a long way off, but it will just help give me an idea of how many people I will need to find places for. If you would like to go as a chaperon, but don’t want to drive, that is fine too, just let me know and we will find you a place. This is always a popular trip and lots of parents like to go. Last year, we had more parents than students! I don’t need to give Shepler’s a headcount until about a week in advance, so you still have a lot of time to make up your mind. We will plan to leave the school around 7:30 so that we will be in St. Ignace in plenty of time for the 9:30 am ferry departure. We will take a carriage tour of the island when we first arrive, then have lunch at a restaurant on the island before touring Fort Mackinac (students are responsible for buying their own meals – should be around $5-7 for lunch – they may also bring cold lunch if they prefer). After touring the fort, the students will have a few hours that they can use to do their choice of activities (at their own expense as prices vary), including a bike ride ($5+ per hour), the Butterfly House ($2.50), the Haunted Theater ($7), or the Grand Hotel ($10). I’ll assign groups for the afternoon based on which activities the kids choose – I’ll be sending home a form once it gets closer to the trip or you may fill out the online form to the right. Time for shopping would also take place during their free time. We will need to be back at the dock around 3:45 to make the 4:00 departure for St. Ignace. We will then meet up at McDonalds in St. Ignace for dinner before heading back to Manistique. I’m guessing we’ll be back in town around 6:30-7:00. If people don’t want to stop at McDonald’s, we could always pack snacks for the way home. Either way is fine with me. The cost for parents is $30, which includes your ferry ticket, your ticket for the carriage ride, and your admission to the fort. The normal price for the adult carriage tour on its own is $28, so this is a GREAT price for all three! This will need to be paid before we leave so that the office can write a check for the full amount. We have to pay like that to get the discounted rates. The students will be responsible to pay for their meals (lunch and dinner) as well as any shopping or activities they want to do in the afternoon. This is the plan for the time being. Since it is so early, it is possible that the businesses may change their schedules, but this should give you a general idea of the plan. | |
